Ms. Marvel Directors Include Bad Boys For Life Duo And Oscar Winner

Ms. Marvel gets a talented pool of directors.

Diversity has been a real driving force in the more recent years at Marvel Studios. Black Panther showed that a film with a mostly all-black cast could do, but it wasn’t just the talent in front of the camera that mattered. With many of these stories, it’s crucial to get an authentic perspective from people who live closer lives to those being shown on screen. If you have people in power behind the camera, they are more likely to grasp all the tiny minute details that no one else would think of.

As such, it’s no surprise that with their more ethnically-diverse projects that they are turning to filmmakers and storytellers with closer backgrounds. This seems to the case with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, so there’s no reason to think it would stop with film. You know for a fact that Marvel Studios is also hoping to do the same for Ms. Marvel, which will introduce their first Muslim superhero.

THR is reporting that the studio has locked down four filmmakers to helm the impending Disney+ show. First up is duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. You likely recognize their names from Bad Boys for Life, a film that was way better than it had any right to be. We also have Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who has won two Oscars in the documentary short category. Finally, there is Meera Menon, who has directed episodes of The Punisher and Titans — so she has superhero experience.

Ms. Marvel is one of many shows slated for Disney+ and marks another step forward in diversity for the MCU. I’m actually super interested in how they’ll execute the tone of the series. In many ways, I see it as a similar tone and style to Spider-Man: Homecoming in that it’s very much from the perspective of a younger team member. And Kamala Khan herself is a huge fan of the Avengers, so I’m sure there will be all sorts of fun tie-ins.
