My Adventures With Superman Review | A Fresh New Take On A Golden Age Superhero For A New Generation

Superman might be me most iconic superhero in history. He made his debut in “Action Comics” in April of 1938. This year the Man of Steel turned 85 years old! He arguably launched what is known as the “Golden Age” of comics. Then in 1978, with Christopher Reeves as the lead, premiered the first superhero blockbuster that started a chain reaction of superhero films.

While all these points are great trophies on a mantle it also reveals a problem with Superman in this modern age of TV and movies, he’s old. Not only that but his origin story has been retold time and time again to the point where it’s a commonly known tale even for those that are not the most avid comic book fans.

The question then becomes, how do you redefine Clark Kent for a new generation?

That is a question I believe “My Adventures With Superman” does a great job of answering. It features an anime-style animation that showcases a young Clark Kent, voiced by Jack Quaid as he joins the Daily Planet as an intern along with his roommate and friend, Jimmy Olsen, voiced by Ishmel Sahid. There they meet another intern, Lois Lane, voiced by Alice Lee. Together they aspire to be the best journalists while unknowingly becoming heroes in the process.

One of the biggest complaints about Superman is how powerful and how much of a “boy scout”, he is. A lot of his accomplishments come with him being the savior of whatever Earth/Universe shattering danger the story called for. “My Adventures With Superman” presents us with a flawed Clark Kent. One that is unsure of himself as to where he belongs in the world. You can see that he has the “hero” inside of him saving a cat for example out of a tree, but his powers come up on accident as he copes with the anxieties of regular life.

That along with his inexperience in his job and being a hero, is what makes this version of Superman relatable with audiences, especially a younger crowd. Despite these flaws, we can clearly see the characteristics that make him a hero and eventually the symbol of hope. One example is when Clark shields Lois from gunfire, only then to find out he was bulletproof.

Speaking of Lois and Clark they are an example of opposites attracting. Lois, like in most versions of the character, is very outgoing and passionate about whatever she puts her mind to. She dominates any room she’s in, something that Clark seems to admire. It s a fun relationship to watch develop. Then sprinkle in some fun antics from Jimmy Olsen and you have a great trio that is reminiscent of a Shonen anime that should draw in a younger crowd.

With that anime style of artwork also comes an opportunity to freshen up the rouges in “My Adventures With Superman”. Some work better than others and a few have even been combined for distinct new looks. Most also seem to be figuring themselves out as well. This takes the focus away from the superhero antics and allows the characters and relationships to shine, but don’t worry there is a fair share of action to keep you invested.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with “My Adventures With Superman”. It’s a fresh take on an 85-year-old superhero that new and old Superman fans can enjoy. Hopefully creating a new generation of appreciation for the Man of Steel. I am interested to see if this series is successful and how they will handle the pacing as it’s a bit inconsistent at times. But for now, we can enjoy this first season!
