Many of us have thought about it, even discussed to some extent when, if ever, a studio would make this move. Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter NBCUniversal has announced the will now make their theatrical films available to stream immediately, as in the same day the films hit the theaters. Films such as Emma, The Hunt, and the well-received The Invisible Man will be available on VOD platforms on March 20.
The rental will be good for 48 hours and has a suggested price of $19.99.This really is a gamechanger folks, especially if other studios follow NBCU’s example and do the same. This could work well with the current state of social distancing being advised, it’s a way to work around the closing down of cinemas.

We at LRM have had a chat or two about this in the past and figured it would only take a matter of time, what we didn’t think about is that it would take a global issue to push one of the studios to commit to it.I have to say the $20 price tag is much, much lower than I would have thought, I figured it would be somewhere around $50. That sounds a bit pricey, but if you have four friends around, and you all want to see the film, $10 per person isn’t bad to watch in the comfort of your, or your buddies home.
Another upside is the ability to pause the film, no more missing key scenes in a (Universal) film by going to use the restroom or being uncomfortable for fear of missing said scenes.
One question I have is, will streaming purchases be counted toward box-office revenue, or how will that work exactly?
