Last year saw a bit of an overhaul of the Transformers film franchise with the release of Bumblebee. Rather than focus almost solely on metal-grinding, balls-to-the-wall action, they opted to finally make a distinctly more human story — one that managed to capture the hearts of plenty of critics and fans alike. But don’t think the folks over at Hasbro are stopping there.
According to a new report from Variety, they will be partnering with the streaming giant Netflix and the online production company Rooster Teeth (best known for Red vs. Blue and RWBY) to bring the original animated series Transformers: War for Cybertron. In this series, they will be telling the origin story of the Transformers universe with a “new animation look and style” that will give the autobots a look we have never seen before.
Serving as showrunner is franchise vet FJ DeSanto and joining as writers are George Krstic (Megas XLR), Gavin Hignight (Transformers: Cyberverse) and Brandon Easton (Agent Carter, Transformers: Rescue Bots).

“In this Transformers origin story, we will explore the expansive universe of Cybertron in a way that audiences have never seen before — to the delight of both existing fans and those coming to the franchise for the first time,” said John Derderian, Netflix’s director of anime.
“We’re thrilled to work with Rooster Teeth’s new premium studio division to bring an all-new Transformers fan-oriented series to Netflix,” added Tom Warner, SVP for the Transformers franchise at Hasbro. “Transformers has a rich history of great storytelling and War for Cybertron is an exciting new chapter in the Transformers Universe.”
While Rooster Teeth may seem like an odd choice, they have been flirty with more ambitious animated projects in recent years with shows like RWBY and their most recent mech project gen:LOCK.
