Netflix’s Enola Holmes Trailer Is Here And She’s On A Mission

The full Enola Holmes trailer is here, finally. The upcoming Netflix movie stars Mille Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) as the younger sister of Mycroft (Sam Claflin), and Sherlock (Henry Cavill). The movie debuts on Netflix on September, 23rd and this is the first full trailer, after an earlier teaser. The movie was originally produced by Legendary, but the distribution rights were snapped up by Netflix earlier this year. Check it out below.

It seems that Enola is on a mission to find her missing mother (Helena Bonham Carter). From what we can tell by the trailer, Enola isn’t treated as an equal by her brothers. The Holmes boys seem intent on schooling Enola so that she can become a ‘proper lady’. Of course, this is set in the Victorian era, and let’s face it, Women’s rights were non-existent back then. I get the feeling Enola Holmes will touch on that subject heavily from this trailer. Enola seems like a girl ready to follow her own path, instead of what is expected of her. Also, I get the feeling that Enola is the only one who senses real danger for her mother. Perhaps Sherlock and Mycroft dismiss Enola’s concerns, forcing her to conduct her own investigation?

Enola Holmes Trailer

I’m not sure what to think about this trailer. I almost feel that with the sound on only, I’d never have guessed this was set in the past. The dialogue, the music, all feels very contemporary, and that kinda goes against the visual aesthetics. Suppose what I am saying is, that I dislike the trailer, but that doesn’t make me uninterested in the movie. I doubt the movie itself will be filled with modern music, least, I hope not.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved the BBC’s Sherlock, which was very much a contemporary tale. However, when it comes to Sherlock Holmes in his proper era, I prefer something a little dark and somber. I grew up with the old ITV version of Sherlock Holmes, and it had this Gothic, and mysterious aesthetic to it, which sucked me in. Whereas, I was not a fan of the recent movies starring Robert Downey, Jr., and Jude Law, despite liking both of them in the roles.

Enola Holmes script comes from Jack Thorne, currently showrunning His Dark Materials for BBC/HBO. I tend to vary on what I think of Jack Thorne. I didn’t enjoy Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, but I do love the adaptation of HDM, so far. What do you think of the Enola Holmes Trailer? Does it make you want to watch, or like me will you watch it because it’s on Netflix anyway most likely? Share your thoughts below.
