Maybe I’m being an idiot here, but I never noticed Colin Farrell as the Penguin in the latest teaser trailer for The Batman. I just thought Farrell hadn’t been revealed, because of course I was looking for Colin Farrell. Turns out, Farrell, and the Penguin were indeed in that trailer, and the actor is under a lot of make-up.
The Batman’s make-up designer Mike Marino has taken to Instagram just to highlight exactly where we see the Penguin (Farrell) under all that prosthetic. Check it out below
I remember seeing this shot in the trailer and wondering who it was? I personally think Farrell is unrecognizable under his Penguin make-up. Yet, at the same time, I didn’t immediately spot that this was a heavily prosthetic character from the trailer. That to me means it’s a very good disguise for Farrell in his new role. Here Farrell looks both intimidating and villainous, but never over the top or cartoon-like. The Penguin has gone through so many guises, and interpretations over the years. However, this very grounded take on the character seems in line with the aesthetic Reeves is going for in The Batman. Riddler, of course, was seen looking nothing like his more famous appearance. No green suits with question marks, instead his face surrounded by what appears to be tape?

As said above, maybe I’m just a fool? Maybe you all spotted Farrell’s Penguin as soon as he appeared on screen. I genuinely hadn’t put the two together until I saw this Instagram post from Marino. I admit I’m more of a Marvel guy than DC, but not when it comes to Batman. The Bat will always be my favorite superhero of them all, so I cannot wait to check out The Batman next year.
