New Witcher Game Announced By CDPR

Yesterday a new Witcher game was announced by developers CDPR. To be fair it has been heavily rumored for some time that Cd Projekt Red would go back to the Witcher well for their next game following Cyberpunk 2077. There are no details of exactly what this Witcher game will be, or when we might first see it. However there were some details released about how Unreal Engine 5 will be the new development engine for the game.

We’re happy to announce that the next installment in The Witcher series of video games is currently in development, kicking off a new saga for the franchise.

This is an exciting moment as we’re moving from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5, beginning a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games. It covers not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant. We’ll closely collaborate with Epic Games’ developers with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences.

At this point, no further details regarding the game — such as a development time frame or release date — are available.

REDengine, the technology which powers Cyberpunk 2077, is still being used for the development of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion.

There are a few things we can perhaps rule out when it comes to this new Witcher game. For one, it is unlikely this will follow on from the events of The Witcher 3. CDPR said at the time that the story of Geralt and Ciri was finished in The Witcher 3. If you have played that game you’ll know Geralt is effectively retired, and Ciri depending on your choices in the game is either the baddest Witcher ever, or the Empress of Nilfgaard. It’s also in the the press release that this is “kicking off a new saga for the franchise.”

For years since the rumors began fans have been wondering what comes next. Will you be a new Witcher created for the game? Will it be a prequel using Geralt? Or, will it be a follow up with Ciri as the main character? Sadly the latter option seems unlikely simply due to how OP Ciri would be as a playable character. Though I’d be happy to be wrong there.

For now we can only speculate and wonder. However one thing is for sure, if CDPR can pull off a game as good as TW3 then we are in for a real treat. Unfortunately they also made Cyberpunk 2077. That was one of the most criticized games in recent years, releasing in an unfinished and unplayable state.

Are you excited for a new Witcher game from CDPR? Thoughts below as always.
