Obaid-Chinoy On Star Wars Rey Sequel Plus Could John Williams Return?

Screenwriter and Peaky Blinders creator Stephen Knight gives a progress update on the Star Wars New Jedi Order movie he's writing.

Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy comments on her Star Wars Rey sequel, plus, could John Williams return to score it. Two separate sources covering potentially the same movie. The Williams connection isn’t specific. However, I’ll signpost some details that may make you think otherwise.

However, let us start with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The Oscar winning director briefly discussed her upcoming Star Wars Rey sequel. Pakistani born Obaid-Chinoy was interviewed by CNN for New Year, and she had some brief words about her Star Wars movie. We’ve heard the movie is set to go into production some time this year.

“I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special. And we’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”

Of course Obiad-Chinoy isn’t the first female director to work on Star Wars. However, she is the first to helm a live-action movie. I did say it was brief folks.

As per the related section above, we know Adam Driver won’t be returning for this movie. However Rey most certainly will. There are also rumors that Lucasfilm wants John Boyega back and that there are two versions of the script currently. One with Boyega and one without. Ergo, it likely would not be a huge part, but could spawn Boyega getting a movie of his own down the line. Question is, does Boyega actually want that or not?

One person that could be tempted to return for this movie is legend John Williams. Williams has essentially retired from composing film scores. However, in a recent statement to The Times newspaper Williams kinda walked that back. Indicating if the right film came along, he could be tempted back.

“If a film came along that I was greatly interested in, with a schedule that I could cope with, then I wouldn’t want to rule anything out. Everything is possible. All is before us. Only our limitations are holding us back. Or, to put it more simply: I like to keep an open mind.”

I really think Williams could be tempted back for this Rey sequel. Not necessarily to score the entire movie, but certainly to expand upon his Rey theme. Williams was particularly find of the theme he created for Rey and previously indicated he’d like to do more with it. So given it would be a ‘small’ gig as they say, I’m sure they could tempt Williams back.

So, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy comments on her Star Wars Rey sequel. Could John Williams return to score it? let us know what you think below as always.
