One of the best things about the streaming services we all enjoy is that they provide an ad-free experience. Sure, Hulu offers a cheaper subscription that has commercials, but most of us choose to pay the extra $3 or whatever it is to not have to worry about those pesky commercials
Variety is reporting that Hulu and AT&T are looking into the idea of implementing what are called “pause-ads”. These ads work of course show up when the subscriber, you guessed it, hits the pause button. Below you can read about what a couple bigwigs from Hulu and AT&T had to say about the subject.
Jeremy Helfand, V.P. of advertising platforms at Hulu:
“As binge-viewing happens more and more, it’s natural they are going to want to pause,”It’s a natural break in the storytelling experience.
Vice president of product at AT&T’s advertising division, Matt Van Houten:
“[Technology] that puts a full-motion video on a screen when a user decides to take a respite. We know you’re going to capture 100% viewability when they pause and unpause. There’s a lot of value in that experience.”

Often times, when I pause the film or television series I am watching, it’s because I am going to leave the room for whatever reason, and the times that I don’t leave the room, it’s a YouTube video that I simply could not resist that’s the culprit. I’m not exactly sure they’re going to have as captive an audience as they think they will.
