The first Pitch Perfect film was something of a surprise.
While I would hesitate to call it a huge hit, it had an admirable box office haul of $115 million worldwide off its relatively small $17 million budget, but it was more than enough to justify the production of its sequel, Pitch Perfect 2. While that film wasn’t as big a hit with critics, fans sure seemed to enjoy it quite a bit, and movie went on to make $287 million worldwide off its $29 million budget — a figure large enough for me to call it a big hit.
Pitch Perfect 2 also served as the directorial debut of Elizabeth Banks, who spearheaded this franchise from the beginning in a producer role. Unfortunately, last June it was confirmed that she would not be returning to the director’s chair, but now it sounds like the production has found its helmer.
While Banks has stepped down as director, she is still sticking around in a producer role, and this Thursday, she took to Twitter to reveal that Step Up All In and OK Go music video director Trish Sie will be taking over for the third entry.

Unfortunately, due to the director’s relatively limited filmography, it’s hard to tell whether or not this is a good choice. I’ve never seen Step Up All In (and I admittedly don’t expect that it’s very good), and directing a music video — especially an OK Go music video — is a much different task than directing a feature.
That being said, Elizabeth Banks is someone who knows what she’s doing, so until I see anything from the actual film, I’ll reserve judgment.
