Robert Pattinson Tries (And Fails) To Describe Christopher Nolan’s Enigmatic Film Tenet

So, what’s Tenet about? Well, let Robert Pattinson tell you…

Christopher Nolan isn’t a filmmaker with a lack of ambition. With each passing film, he seems to be grasping at more abstract concepts. With that in mind, it’s almost a shock that a fairly straightforward movie like Dunkirk actually got made. With Tenet, Christopher Nolan seems to be diving even further into the world of the abstract. It’s hard to tell from the trailer, but it does seem to be dealing with the palindromic nature of things. Be it words like “Tenet” or moving both forwards and backwards simultaneously, it’s all-in on the weird.

But just what is this movie about? One actor who has likely spoken most about it in the past is Robert Pattinson. For quite a long time he’s been talking about how amazing the script for the movie is. Given how extensively he’s been talking about it, you’d think he’d be able to describe it to journalists.

“Even if I had seen it, I genuinely don’t know if I’d be able to…” Pattinson told GQ. “I was just thinking, I just called up my assistant 20 minutes ago: ‘What the fuck do I say? I have no idea.’ She’s a lot cleverer than I am. Like, she went to college and stuff. And I’m just like saying all this stuff, and I was like, ‘Oh God, no. I can’t even bullshit my way through this.’ ”

“This thing, it’s so insane,” Pattinson continued, discussing the globetrotting nature of the film. “And in each country there’s, like, an enormous set-piece scene, which is like the climax of a normal movie. In every single country.”

I know what you’re thinking. If even the actor has no idea how to explain it, how can anyone explain it? Well, fret not. If we’re to believe the word of Christopher Nolan, Pattinson knows more than he’s letting on.

“The interesting thing with Rob is, he’s slightly f**king with you,” Nolan said. “But he’s also being disarmingly honest. It’s sort of both things at once. When you see the film, you’ll understand. Rob’s read on the script was extremely acute. But he also understood the ambiguities of the film and the possibilities that spin off in the mind around the story. And so both things are true. Yes, he’s f**king with you, because he had a complete grasp of the script. But a complete grasp of the script, in the case of Tenet, is one that understands and acknowledges the need for this film to live on in the audience’s mind, and suggest possibilities in the audience’s mind. And he was very much a partner in crime with that.”

If you were hoping for even the slightest bit of concrete detail, though, I’ll help you out. When the interviewer referred to Pattinson’s character as a time traveler, Pattinson was quick to correct.

“[My character]’s not a time traveler,” Pattinson said. “There’s actually no time traveling. [laughs] That’s, like, the one thing I’m approved to say.”

So…does any of this help you out? Do you have the slightest idea of what to expect from Tenet, or is everyone just playing it up? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below!
