Rumor: Spider-Man 3 Production Delayed Until 2021 | LRM’s Barside Buzz

Tom Holland signs a deal for a new Spider-Man trilogy at Marvel Studios

According to a new rumor, Spider-Man 3 production is delayed until 2021. The third MCU Spider-Man movie was supposed to kick off this December for a December 17th, 2021 release. However, according to The Direct to production start date has been shifted again, to either January or February of 2021.

If true, this is not a major delay but does bring into question whether the movie could still be ready for December release next year? I theorised recently that with Doctor Strange 2 commencing filming by November this year, it would make sense to swap the movies. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled for release on March 25th, 2022. It would make more sense for Doctor Strange 2 and Spider-Man 3 to swap release dates. That’s just my opinion based on what we know so far.

Right now, there is nothing to indicate that Sony are considering shifting from that December release for Spider-Man 3. However, it would not surprise me in the slightest to hear about a small shift in the slate. Doctor Strange 2 is now beginning months before Spidey 3. Take all this with a grain of salt for now. Like any rumor outside of the trades we can’t say for certain how accurate this is. None of the bigger trades have picked up on this yet, but I would expect that to happen soon if this story is accurate.

The fact Spider-Man 3 is a little different to all other MCU movies in production always has to be considered. Sony ultimately make the big calls for scheduling on the Spider-Man movies despite them being produced by Marvel Studios. The Spider-Man and Doctor Strange sequels have already been swapped around once, it’s entirely possible they will again? I’m just saying that would likely be Sony’s call and not Marvel’s.

Yesterday, Sony’s entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra said this during Bank of America’s 2020 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference. We got this information via The Wrap.

“What we won’t do is make the mistake of putting a very, very expensive $200 million movie out in the market unless we’re sure that theaters are open and operating at significant capacity.”

Now, we all hope that things are back to normal by December, 2021, but who knows? Sony are clearly ready to sit on any of their movies until they know theater capacity has returned. That could mean it’ll be a while before we see any big budget Sony movies hitting theaters.

What do you think of the rumor Spider-Man 3 production is delayed until 2021? If it is delayed, do you think it should swap again with Doctor Strange 2? Leave your thoughts below.
