Marvel Studios President and resident genius Kevin Feige has been saying for some time that Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to be quite different.
Words like “cosmic” have been thrown around a lot, leading to the expectation that even more of our heroes’ adventures will be in outer space. Others, like myself, also expect less solo movies and more team-ups that aren’t full blown Avengers movies.
Talking to Yahoo Movies UK Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Avengers: Infinity War and the yet-to-be-officially titled Avengers 4, basically agree with Feige, calling their two films the “end of the book.”
Anthony said the difference between Phase 3 and Phase 4 will be “pretty drastic.” But Joe took it one step farther:
“I think massively different. I think that this is if Marvel has been writing a book for ten years, it’s the end of the book and someone is going to write a new book.
Who knows what that new book will be but this is an ending and that’ll be a new beginning.”
We know the end of Phase 3 is the end of the overall story we have been watching; the reappearance of the Infinity Stones and the birth of the heroic age. But, with the stones getting used soon and actors like Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. moving on, it is certainly the end of an era.
What most interests me about this quote is, “someone is going to write a new book.” Authors can change storyline to storyline in the comics, but does this quote perhaps foreshadow Feige may move on to other things? Because if anyone “wrote” the first “book,” it was him. Feige hasn’t said he’s leaving, but he’s had ten great years at Marvel Studios and I bet he could get a job just about anywhere now…
