ORIGINAL STORY:
The coronavirus train keeps on churning. We’ve seen it impact countless events and film releases. Now, you can add one more production to the list. Destin Daniel Cretton, director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has just self-isolated. Cretton’s doctor recommended the self-isolation, and as a result, the first unit has halted production in Australia.
Of course, first unit involves Cretton, along with the key talent, so you can understand the stakes are fairly high. What makes the stakes much higher is that Cretton has a newborn baby. As such, he decided to get tested as a precaution, which makes sense. Given the amount of caution, one can hope that it’s just a false alarm and that no one is in danger.
However, production on Shang-Chi as a whole has NOT been shut down. The second unit and other production aspects are moving ahead as planned, and in the coming week, if Cretton’s results come back negative, I’m sure we’ll see its first unit start up again. As far as we know, this will not affect any release date.

Below is a note to Shang-Chi’s crew:
“As many of you know, Destin, our director, has a new born baby. He wanted to exercise additional caution given the current environment and decided to get tested for Covid-19 today. He is currently self-isolating under the recommendation of his doctor. While he waits for the results of the test, we are suspending 1st unit production in an abundance of caution until he gets the results this coming week. Second unit and off production will continue as normal. We will reach out to everyone by Tuesday for the latest update.
This is an unprecedented time. We appreciate everyone’s understanding as we work through this.”
Shang-Chi hasn’t been the only movie affected by the coronavirus. Earlier, Tom Hanks, who is working on an Elvis Presley biopic, shared with fans that he and his wife tested positive for COVID-19. Thus far, there have been 156 confirmed cases and three deaths.
Fingers crossed that this is just an instance of a studio being overly-cautious and that there is nothing to be concerned about.
