Shazam has been everywhere lately. Over the last couple of days we have had officially released photos, two videos from an overseas film festival that allowed us to see our first footage of the film, and today, the bolted one appears on the cover of the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. You can check it out here.
The film’s star, Zachary Levi also spoke with the outlet and talked about how Shazam is not like most heroes insofar as he actually wants to be a superpowered individual.
“It’s complete wish-fulfillment — if you scour all of DC and Marvel there are very few characters that are actually stoked to be a superhero. They’re not brooding, they’re not put out, like ‘Oh dammit, I gotta save the world again!’ Billy Batson is like Peter Parker, they’re thrilled to have these powers and can’t wait to try them out.”

You see what I’ve been saying? Are you with me yet? More fun.
A point producer Peter Safran reiterates.
“From my perspective, Shazam! represents the next step in the evolution of the DC brand. You had Wonder Woman, then Aquaman [coming Dec. 21] is another big step, then comes Shazam! — all different movies, but all have a unique tone that moves away from the darkness of the prior DC movies.”
While I have enjoyed the darker films in the DC Extended Universe, I think this will be a nice change of pace, and may put DC on a more widely pallatable path with their future films. While the film is shaping up to be much lighten than previous installements into the DCEU, I don’t look for it to be the same kind of tone and fun that a Marvel movie is, I get a different, sort of a mischievous vibe from Shazam!
