Shazam Will Be Funny, But Won’t Lack Drama, Says Director

DC’s Shazam is trying to bring a new flavor to the studio’s extended universe. Zachary Levi, who will star as the title character, has said his film will be the DC Guardians of Galaxy. The film’s director, David F. Sandberg is also on board with the humor, but he also knows that a good film has both comedic and dramatic elements, and managing the two, is where the trick is:

“The important thing for me, is to mix the funny with a threat that’s serious and to also have dramatic moments. All funny all the time takes the weight out of it.”

If DC is going to use the film as a way to lighten the entire universe, Zachary Levi was likely the perfect choice to help do that. Having experience on the action/comedy Chuck, Levi has the necessary balance as an actor needed for what DC is planning to do with the film.

I hope Levi was correct in saying the film will resemble Guardians of Galaxy (my favorite Marvel film), as far as tone and level of fun. I think this is something the DCEU really needs. I am more interested in Shazam than any other currently slated DC film.
