Like many people, I thoroughly enjoyed the National Treasure movies. They were goofy, ridiculous, but a hell of a lot of fun to watch. They took what was fun about Dan Brown novels, added an extra layer of jokiness and American history, and turned it into a movie. Its sequel was about as fun as its predecessor, and based on its performance, it seemed as though another follow-up would be in the cards.
Now, many years later, it sounds like it may actually be happening. At least, Disney has started the process for the next film. Buried in a Bad Boys 4 news piece, THR dropped that Disney has hired Bad Boys for Life scribe Chris Bremner to pen National Treasure 3.

Of course, it’s not a sure thing, but this is the most momentum we’ve ever had for this movie. Just around a year-and-a-half ago, National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub felt that Disney had no interest because of how little it’d make compared to other projects Disney could focus on.
“When National Treasure first got made, there was a lot more money to go around. Everybody got paid nicely. The problem with getting the third one made isn’t the people who are getting paid saying, ‘I’m not doing it unless you pay me a lot!’ It’s really that Disney feels they have other films they want to make that they think will make them more money. I think they’re wrong. I think they’re right about the movies they’re making; they’re obviously doing a really good job at making great films. I just think this would be one of them, and they don’t quite realize how much the Internet is begging for a third National Treasure.”
And I can kinda see why Disney had this mindset. Why pay $250 million in budget and advertising just to make $500 million when you can spend $450 million to make $1 billion, right?
Well, perhaps with Disney+ being a new venue, a National Treasure sequel can find its home there.
