It’s no exaggeration to say that Star Wars has been going through a tumultuous time. While the Disney films got off to a mostly well-liked start with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, that victory didn’t last long. Star Wars: The Last Jedi split the fandom in two, with half of them being right, and the other half being wrong (I’ll let you guess which was which). There were many cries about what they felt were disgraceful decisions made about characters and overall plot.

Solo: A Star Wars Story continued this trend. While it wasn’t nearly as reviled as its predecessor, it flopped hard at the box office, becoming the first Star Wars film to do so. And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker? While it has since received the criticism I believe it so clearly deserves, it was initially accepted by many fans who saw it as a movie that checked a lot of fan service boxes they wanted checked. 

And yet, among all this, we have Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a film that was okay. As a story, it had many issues, but it’s put up on a pedestal as the kind of movie Star Wars fans truly want.

“I think we learned a lot from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Lucasfilm canon keeper Pablo Hidalgo told Star Light Star Bright. “We learned that most fans aren’t actually that interested in story or characters. They’re actually interested in world-building and fan service. That feeling they had when they were five? They want it to be re-captured at all costs. At the expense of story, character, and all common sense.”

That’s quite a bold statement. But what does this mean for the strategy at Lucasfilm going forward?

“We’ve decided to nix all of our books, all of our comics, all of our movies, and most of our TV shows. No one wants them anyway. They’ve made that clear,” Hidalgo continued. “Instead, we realized the way our fans would get the most out of our content is through Wookieepedia articles.”

Starting next week, you will see StarWars.com take over Wookieepedia, where they will update the site with a new entry.

“It can be anything,” Hidalgo said. “It can be specs on an X-Wing, Watto’s favorite hobbies, or even world-building details on the next big arc we had in mind. But don’t worry — it won’t be told in narrative form, of course. Instead, it’ll read like a dry, boring Wikipedia article. But at least this way, we won’t piss anyone off about how our characters are ‘out of character.’ The way we’re writing it, we’ll be sure it’ll be completely devoid of character and all creative risks and decisions.”

So, does that mean we won’t be getting another season of The Mandalorian?

“If you were caught u in our Disney+ show, you’ll still be able to follow Dyn Jarren’s adventures in his own Mandalorian Files Wookieepedia entry,” Hidalgo said. “Instead, we decided to create a spinoff show called The Child’s Adventures where we’ll follow Baby Yoda’s foray into the world after those events. He’ll retain his cute, lovable personality, only this time we’ve cut out all the pesky things like actual adventure or peril. We think fans are going to love it, and it will be the sole series moving forward. With this new creative strategy, our goal was to get most fans the hell off our damn backs for once. I think we’ll be able to do that, no problem.”
