Star Wars Moving Beyond Trilogies In The future

Star Wars trilogy. I’m not even talking about the Original Trilogy, but just placing the word “trilogy” after Star Wars. It’s something that’s defined the franchise for decades and decades. Even after we got more movies that made up an entire saga, they were all part of a smaller trilogy. It’s just part of the canon language we’ve been using ever since we’ve been exposed to it (or at least those of us who weren’t born before the trilogy was complete).

With the Sequel Trilogy coming to an end this coming Friday, you know things will be changing forever for the franchise. Lucasfilm will have to find a new direction to take things, and it sounds like Kathleen Kennedy is hoping to move away from using trilogies.

“I think it gives us a more open-ended view of storytelling and doesn’t lock us into this three-act structure,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “We’re not going to have some finite number and fit it into a box. We’re really going to let the story dictate that.”

It sounds like they may be taking a page out of the Marvel Studios playbook. As is very obvious at this point, they really aren’t playing the trilogy game, and are simply weaving in and out of separate franchises for the story as a whole, having each film be a small piece of a greater puzzle — all while making sure each movie is satisfying in and of itself.

It’s an approach that will allow Star Wars to tell great stories beyond the typical trilogy, and hopefully change expectations of the structure of future movies. But, we’ll see if Star Wars fans are all for that. If there’s something we know it’s that they have very specific ideas as to what a Star Wars movie needs to be, and one can’t help but wonder if keeping the stories as trilogies is something that they cling to.
