Stephen Amell Says Goodbye To Arrow

It’s the end of an era for the DC comics television universe, or Arrow-verse.

Smallville may have been first for the then-WB, now-CW network, but Arrow revolutionized the superhero genre for the small screen. Lead by its brooding yet charismatic lead Stephen Amell, the series was a first step in the creation of an expanding universe. Eight years, six spinoffs, and numerous crossovers later, the man who started it all is saying goodbye.

While this seasons’ Crisis On Infinite Earths event saw Oliver Queen make the ultimate sacrifice, Wednesday night marked the official end of Arrow. The day before the airing of the series finale, Amell took to his Instagram account to deliver some final words on his time as the “Emerald Archer.”

“‪Today’s bittersweet. Arrow meant so much to me for so many years. It was a transformative journey… but it was time to let it go. I lace my boots and don the hood one last time tonight. I’ll forever cherish being an ambassador for Oliver Queen. Thank you for the honor. “

This writer learned of Arrow a couple years after its premiere. However, thanks to a quick binging of seasons 1 and 2, I was fully on board the Oliver Queen bandwagon. The series definitely had a Batman Begins feel to it since the first episode, and the story arcs incorporated some characters from Batman’s “rogues gallery.” Frankly, Amell’s portrayal of Queen was the closest we had to a television Bruce Wayne.

As Amell said, it is bittersweet. The Arrow-verse will continue to grow, introducing new characters for audiences to attach themselves to. However, Amell’s presence will always be missed. Hoods will still be worn and arrows will still slice through the air, but the man known as Oliver Queen will remain an unmatched legend. And the actor who played him will forever be at the top of the mountain of television superhero portrayals.

Thank you, Stephen Amell… you never failed this universe.
