Stunning First Official Look At The New Batwoman Suit

One of the biggest stories this year coming out of the Arrowverse was the departure of Ruby Rose from Batwoman. Warner Bros. and The CW decided not to kill her off but like her cousin, Bruce Wayne, she would mysteriously disappear. A few months later it was revealed that the awesome Javicia Leslie would take over as Batwoman, but she would do it as the new character Ryan Wilder in season two of Batwoman.

The big question on everyone’s mind was what would she look like in the iconic black and red suit. Exactly one month ago, Leslie shared a first look at what she looked like wearing the traditional Batwoman suit with straight red hair. Today The CW and Warner Bros. Television has graced us with two images of the new re-designed Batwoman suit for Leslie’s Ryan Wilder. You can check them out below!

The press release mentions that initially, Wilder would wear Kate Kane’s batsuit, but by the third episode of season two, she will have redesigned it and reveal the new Batsuit. Sending a message to Gotham that a new hero has emerged. The new suit was conceptualized by Batwoman costume designer Maya Mani and created by Ocean Drive Leather. The wig was created by Janice Workman. The makeup was styled by Cory Roberts.

Mani has created many of the Arrowverse’s suits. She commented about this particular creation. “I was asked by Caroline Dries to design a Batsuit that was unique to the character of Ryan Wilder; as she is a highly-skilled fighter, encapsulating her raw, athletic, and passionate nature was imperative,” said Mani. “As Batwoman, Javicia Leslie not only brings a fresh perspective, but physical strength to the role. It was important for the new suit to define Javicia’s commanding presence while showcasing her athleticism and allowing her the freedom to express the physical nature of Batwoman, all while looking ultra-cool in the process!”

What Does Javicia Leslie Think Of It?

Leslie is breaking barriers by being the first black actress to portray Batwoman in a live-action television series or film production. She also gave her thoughts on the new design. “I love the fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman — it’s her style, her swag, and her moment! It was an honor to be able to collaborate with Caroline and Maya. I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!”

Executive producer Caroline Dries also talked about the new batsuit and it’s a powerful statement. “Ryan’s journey starts from a place of ‘What can this Batsuit do for me?’ But it’s not long before she realizes the power of its symbol and what it can do for everyone else in Gotham City. As Ryan embraces everything that makes her special, she adjusts the suit to fit her physically and figuratively. This meant creating a new body design and new cowl that was undeniably a statement that screamed ‘powerful.’”

“Maya Mani sent me her drawings and I loved it. The wig was something we never perfected in season one, and Janice Workman crushed it with this new take. Javicia and I saw various prototypes of styles and red ombres, and at one point we were trading our own iPad-doodled versions. Janice translated that into what we are looking at now. When I see it, I smile. It makes me feel inspired.”

Overall Thoughts

I think that it’s a beautiful design. It is interesting that it has a cape with a gradient going from black down to red. Also, I am really digging curly hair with red accents,  but other than that it is a fairly standard CW superhero costume. I like the fact that she will be taking a few episodes to get to her suit. One complaint I had about the first season was that I didn’t like how they rushed Kate Kane to a full-on Batwoman in the first episode.
