The Acting Career of John Boyega Was Inspired By A Johnny Depp Balancing Act

I first noticed Boyega in a kickass film called Attack the Block, if you still haven’t seen the film, I’d definitely recommend you do so at your earliest. Boyega then rose to worldwide fame as Stormtrooper FN-2187 in Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy. Many actors took inspiration from others they had seen on screen. However, the story of John Boyega’s path to Hollywood is slightly different.

As it turns out, the actor was inspired by another Disney-owned character, Captain Jack Sparrow. Except his experience was not from watching a film, but while watching a scene being filmed. As Boyega explains, it was a film shoot at his school that gave Boyega an epiphany that would set him on his career path. You can check out what he had to say while speaking with THR below.

“We looked down and I saw Johnny Depp on top of two carriages, balancing himself, as Jack Sparrow. I saw what I wanted to do. I thought God sent the whole film set right here. He sent a film that I would love to star in, that I’d love to be a part of. I never went back.”

This had to be the fourth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, On Stranger Tides. Sometimes, life decisions are made in a split-second, which sounds like the case for Boyega’s career choice, and while they don’t always work out for everyone, on this day, Boyega chose, wisely

Wise indeed. As I mentioned above this choice eventually led to Boyega being cast in arguably the biggest film franchise of all-time, Star Wars. And while the most recent trilogy was, in my opinion anyway, mediocre at best, it surely brought Boyega and his skills to the attention of studio executives all around Tinseltown.
