The Comic Stash: January Comics To Pick Up For The New Year!

Happy New Year! Welcome to my monthly column The Comic Stash: January edition! These are titles worth checking out. For those returning readers, huge thank you! The last few years have been hard on people all over the world. However, it is nice to have a way to escape a little in the comic world. I hope and wish everyone out there a better new year with things becoming a little more normal as we try to live our lives. But with a new year comes new books and new titles to look forward to each month.

These again are just titles that I feel will be worth your time. I am not a paid writer or own a comic shop. Just a guy that has been collecting comics for about 37 years. So, I just like to give my suggestions. But, always grab what catches your interest and love of a character, art, or story. The following are set to release this month. However, there can be a delay that same week.

Week One January 5, 2022

The Comic Stash: January starts from Image Comics with a one-shot story featuring the main villain in the popular series Nocterra. Nocterra: Blacktop Bill Special #1 is by Scott Snyder and Tony S Daniel, with art by Chris Sotomayor and Denys Cowman. This story gives the fans the back story of Blacktop Bill and what kind of person he was before the world become dark. A must for fans of this great series, to get more of the story.

From Marvel Comics comes Darkhold: Omega #1 by Steve Orlando with art by Cian Tormey. In this issue we get to see our heroes find out what they get for losing their minds in a twisted reality.

Marvel has a new series coming out, Elektra: Black, White and Blood #1 by Charles Soule, Declan Shalvey, and Leonardo Romero, with art by Mark Bagley, and Simon D’Armini. There will be a few variant covers for this one and some are worth getting because they are incredible to have.

Image Comics also has a very odd title coming out, Monkey Meat #1. The story and art is by Juni Ba. The story is as crazy as the title suggest and worth grabbing a copy to see for yourself.

Aftershock Comics never disappointes me in the title and stories that they release. The stories are spot on, and the art seems to follow as well. They have a new series, Bylines in Blood #1  by Van Jensen with art by Eric Schultz. This story will have an awfully close feel to real life. The writer turns private detective must cope with world after a plague almost destroys it.

Week Two January 12, 2022

Continuing The Comic Stash: January edition, Marvel Comics will have a new series coming out this week, Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #1 by Chip Zdarsky with art by Rafael de Latorre. This series will continue the storyline: Devil’s Reign.

Marvel will also have a one-shot to continue the Waterlanders story called, Wastelanders: Black Window #1. This will be by Steven Deknight with art by Well-Bee.

DC Comics has the second issue of their new series, Batgirls #2 by Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad with art by Jorge Corona.

Image Comics also has new series coming out this week, The Scorched #1 by Sean Lewis with art by Stephen Segovia, along with variant cover by Marc Silvestri, and Todd McFarlane. This will be a must for any Spawn fan as this will be the collections of Spawns in a Spawn team-up series.

A personal favorite from Aftershock Comics coming out this week is, Maniac of New York: The Bronx is Burning #2. This delightful story is by Elliott Kalan with art by another favorite, Andrea Mutti. We follow serial killer Harry as he invades a local high school as he takes out those unlucky to be in his way.

For fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Boom! Studios has Buffy: The Last Vampire Slayer #2 out this week. We get to see Buffy in the future as an older Buffy doing her thing alone, this story is by Casey Gilly with art by Joe Jaro.

Dynamite Comics has a new series coming out as well this week Hell Sonja #1 by Christopher Hastings with art by Pasquale Qualano. For fans of Sonja, we get to see her rule hell and the adventures that follow.

Second Sight Publishing has the title, These Damn Kids #2 by Bradley Golden and Peter Breau, with art by Helmut Racho. A fun addition The Comic Stash: January edition recommends. There is a Children of the Corn feel to the story that is a fun read so far. It is definitely worth checking out.

Week Three January 19, 2022

Moving on to the next week of The Comic Stash: January edition, Marvel Comics has a new Wolverine series coming out with the title, X Lives of Wolverine #1. The story is by Benjamin Percy with art by Joshua Cassara.

Marvel also has another new series as they try to give the She-Hulk series another try. She-Hulk #1 is by Rainbow Roswell with art by Roge Antonio.

Marvel’s other new series coming out this week is Silk #1 by Emily Kim with art by Takeshi Miyazawa.

DC Comics has a new series as well this week, Batman: The Knight #1 by Chip Zdarsky with art by Carmine Di Giandomenico. Zydarsky tells the story of Bruce as he makes his way to learning and training to become the Dark Knight. This will be a fun read and I personally enjoy Zdarsky’s work and look forward this story.

Boom! Studios is releasing another Buffy the Vampire Slayer favorite comic, Angel #1 by Christopher Cantwell with art by Daniel Bayliss. This story of course will follow Angel and Cordelia in their new adventures.

Animal Castle #2, by Xavier Dorison with art by Felix Delep from Ablaze Comics, comes out this week. For fans of Animal Farm this is your book. The writing is great with matching wonderful artwork.

Finally, this week for those Cowboy Bebop fans from Titan Books comes, Cowboy Bebop #1 by Dan Watters with art by Lamar Mathurin.

Week Four January 26, 2022

Rounding out The Comic Stash: January edition is DC Comic’s Detective Comics has finally reached #1050! The story is by Mark Waid, Matthew Rosenberg, and Mariko Tamaki with art by Danny Miki, Ivan Reis, Fernando Blanco and Dan Mora. This of course will come with several covers to pick from so check them all out.

DC Comics has Batman and Catwoman Special #1 out this week. The comic is coming off a delay, but still should be an enjoyable story. It is by Tom King with art by Bernard Chang, Mitch Gerads, Tommy Edwards, and John Paul Leon.

Marvel Comics has a five-issue mini-series coming out this week, X Deaths of Wolverine #1 (of 5) by Benjamin Percy with art by Federico Vicentini.

Marvel Comics has a one-shot coming out this week also with the title: Mary Jane & Blackcat: Beyond #1. This is by Patrick Gleason, Zeb Wells, Kelly Thompson, Saladin Admed, Cody Ziglar, and Jed MacKay. Also, the art is by Carlos Villa, and Sabine Rich.

Aftershock Comics has a one-shot from their vampire hit series, Dark Red: Where Roads Lead #1 by Tim Seeley with art by Corin Howell.

Image Comics has Stray Dogs: Dog Days #2 (of 2) by Tony Fleecs, with art by Trish Forstner. This second issue will give the last back stories of the remaining dogs that have been kidnaped. The first mini-series was an exceptional story, and the art is very misleading to what was going on in the story, just perfect.
