Warning! Spoilers for Season 2 below.
The Hulu series, The Great, has been a big success since it was released in 2020. This period dramedy series sometimes based on the true story of Catherine the Great was not what I thought it would be. It’s modernized in a good way and I was hooked after seeing the first episode. Season 2 left us with a huge cliffhanger, but there’s great news! The Great will be getting a season 3!
Some period projects with a modern take don’t land very well. The 1996 Romeo + Juliet had a modern setting with the original dialogue, but the “Shakespearean speech” was jarring in my opinion. The Great uses the 18th Century setting and goes wild with it. The speech, mannerisms, and costumes are intentionally off accuracy and I think their fantasy historical take works really well.
Season 2 Was Insane!
With Catherine on the Russian throne, season 2 had the new monarch struggling to stay afloat in her court. Peter is trying to get close to her and get her to love and trust him. It almost works, but it all goes to shit when he does the most Peter thing one can do. He sleeps with then accidentally kills her mother… And he hides it from Catherine. This man-child did grow quite a bit, but that’s unforgivable. Also, Paul was born.
The Great Season 3 will have 10 episodes just like seasons 1 and 2 and I can’t wait to see Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult return. The awkward conversation between Catherine and Peter after Catherine’s murder attempt is gonna be some juicy drama!
