The Defenders Gets A Teaser, Release Date, & Viral Site

Netflix has become quite the crowded platform for all things Marvel. It all started off modestly enough with a great Daredevil series back in 2015. That year, we got two seasons of different shows — Daredevil and Jessica Jones. The next year, we got two more in the form of Daredevil and Luke Cage. This year, however, looks to be a whole new ball of wax.

We’ve already seen Iron Fist hit the small screen, and while not a lot of critics loved it, fans seemed to enjoy it for what it was. Next on their slate are The Defenders, The Punisher, and (presumably) Jessica Jones Season 2 (which just started shooting yesterday). Very soon, Marvel will become synonymous with the streaming services, and audience will pretty much be able to get their superhero fix year around.

It’s been a long buildup to The Defenders, and though the series is hitting this summer, for the longest time, we had no indication of when to expect it. How closely would they release it next to the recently-released Iron Fist? My money was always on a July release, but if the recent teaser for the team-up limited series is any indication, I was one month off.

Check out the teaser below!

If you take a look at the timecode at the top right part of the footage, by the time Jessica knocks out the camera, it freezes on 08:18:20:17, which is likely referencing an August 18, 2017 release date. Also of note is the URL at the top left. If you go to the site, you’ll be treated to a simple viral site showing various headlines featuring each of the Defenders, as well as a video that focuses on Iron Fist’s Joy and Ward.

The teaser itself is charming enough, showing our heroes descend on an elevator after what seems like a pretty intense battle. Muzak plays as the Defenders recover. Luke Cage’s sweater is full of bullets, Daredevil is sporting a suit and a makeshift headband, and Iron Fist looks exhausted beyond all belief. Jessica Jones seems to be the only one smart enough to notice the camera at the corner of the elevator, and promptly smashes it.

It’s a fun little teaser, though it’s admittedly something that feels a bit more at home in a Joss Whedon show than a Marvel Netflix show. We’ll see how they’re able to mesh in some of the inevitable humor the series has with its darker tones that have been prevalent throughout. It wouldn’t be fair to put the show in a box, considering that each one has been its own special entity up until this point. Like all the others, it’s sure to have its own style and feel, and we look forward to seeing what that is.
