The Dive | Maximilian Erlenwein on Remaking Breaking Surface and Underwater Filming Challenges

Louisa Krause and Sophie Lowe star in The Dive

The Swedish/Norwegian film Breaking Surface barely came out three years ago when director Maximilian Erlenwein was approached to craft an English-language remake of the film.

With its intense story of survival, Erlenwein found the sisterhood bond in a life-or-death situation was too good to pass on. With a few changes, mainly into a sea dive in a tropical season, The Dive is an elevated sense of fear that leaves viewers gasping for air.

The film stars Louisa Krause (Billions, The Girlfriend Experience) and Sophie Lowe (Blow the Man Down, Medieval). Erlenwein directed the movie from the script by Erlenwein and Joachim Heden (Breaking Surface).

Here is the official synopsis of The Dive:

A deep-sea diving trip at one of the world’s most remote spots becomes a fight for survival for sisters Drew and May when a catastrophic landslide sends rocks tumbling into sea. After being struck by the rockfall, May now lies 28 meters below the surface, trapped by debris and unable to move. With dangerously low levels of oxygen, it is up to Drew to fight for her sister’s life. She must put her own life in jeopardy and risk paying the ultimate sacrifice. But with no help in sight, time is quickly running out…

LRM Online’s Gig Patta chatted with director and writer Max Erlenwein on the English-language remake. We talked about the challenges of underwater shoots, using very few special effects, and finding the right cast of actresses with scuba diving experience.

Maximilian Erlenwin made his feature film directorial debut with the crime drama Gravity in 2009 and followed up with Stereo in 2014. In 2019, he directed episodes of the crime series Skylines on Netflix.

The Dive is in select theaters and available for rent on Friday, August 25.
