The Green Hornet Is Getting Another Chance At A Big-Screen Adaptation

This past January, Amasia Entertainment won the rights to the Green Hornet property. You know, the old-school 1930s serial-Turned-TV series in the 1960s? Bruce Lee made the supporting role of Kato in the aforementioned series. Back in 2011, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg took a crack at a reboot of the property, and while I wouldn’t call it an outright flop, it didn’t perform nearly well enough to reboot the entire franchise. Luckily, in Hollywood, nothing is truly dead.

Now, the property, rebranded as The Green Hornet and Kato, has landed over at Universal Pictures. The big studio will be working with Amasia Entertainment in developing this new take on the property. It’s worth noting that Amasia is co-founded by Michael Helfant, and Helfant was president and COO of Marvel Studios during its humble origins. He helped launch the MCU with movies like Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.

This new deal between Universal and Amasia was announced earlier today.

“The Green Hornet is one of the most iconic and beloved superhero tales ever created, and it has entertained generations of fans in every form of storytelling. We are thrilled to be partnering with Michael, Bradley, and the entire Amasia team to launch an exciting new cinematic world for Britt Reid, Kato, and the Black Beauty, and we can’t wait to share it with global audiences soon,” Universal president Peter Cramer said in a statement.

Helfant said, “Universal will be a great home for our new Green Hornet and Kato. The team at Universal share our passion & enthusiasm for the property and will devote the resources to launch a truly global franchise. And, it’s very cool that Universal was the original distributor of the 1940s movie serials. Our goal is to make a film that existing fans will love, and new fans will love to discover. With Universal, it feels like we are merging the past and the future, creating a contemporary version of the franchise that is fresh and exciting while respecting its long legacy and history. I can’t wait!”

As a side note, if this thing takes off, how awesome would it be for them to get Mike Moh to play Kato? The actor recently portrayed Bruce Lee in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Seeing him take on the role Lee played would be a cool way to bring things full circle.

What do you think? Are you excited to see The Green Hornet and Kato underway? Do you see this as a franchise that could possibly thrive in today’s climate? Let us know your thoughts down below!
