The Invisible Man Trailer Shows Physical And Mental Abuse At Its Worst

Not too long ago, all eyes were focused on Universal and their impending Dark Universe. This would incorporate classic monsters like The Mummy, Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein’s monsters, and of course, The Invisible Man. Years have passed, and we now know how that whole thing turned out, right (read: poorly).

So, when Blumhouse took control of the Invisible Man property, I was interested in what the film would actually be. How would it take the classic character and re-imagine him for the big screen? Well, just in case you haven’t yet seen what this thing is about, I present you the brand-new trailer from the studio.

Pretty intense s**t, right? It’s a surprisingly modern film that is relevant to many modern women who have found themselves as victims of an abusive relationship. And to be frank, it’s not even trying to be subtle about the message.

A True Modern Horror

While it’s easy to see that this is a story about an abusive relationship, the layers go a bit deeper than that. Star Elizabeth Moss, while speaking to Empire, opened up about how literal this danger can feel for women. It’s not just this feeling of being abused, but the feeling that no one believes her. That no one can see the danger.

“You literally have a man who is invisible, you can’t see him, she’s saying he’s there, that he’s attacking her, abusing her, manipulating her, and everyone around her is saying, ‘Relax. It’s fine,’” Moss told the outlet. “And she keeps saying, ‘No, he is – he’s alive, he’s doing this,’ and no-one believes her. The analogy is incredibly clear.”

I think the plus here is that even as someone who has never had to deal with anything like that, the movie comes across as terrifying and engaging. To be up against a guy you can’t see and no one believes is real? Genius.
