After a decade since its final episode, one of Showtime’s influential original series is returning to the network.
The L Word has been granted a second incarnation by the premium cable network, which ran from 2004 to 2009. The six-season drama series, created by Ilene Chaiken, focused on a close-knit group of lesbians living in Los Angeles and their family and friends who support and oppose their lifestyles. The series featured a talented cast including Jennifer Beals (Flashdance, The Chicago Code), Mia Kirshner (Bloodline, 24), Katherine Moennig (Ray Donovan), Pam Grier (Jackie Brown, Foxy Brown) and Marlee Matlin (The West Wing, Children Of A Lesser God).

Showtime has ordered an 8-episode series for the show’s latest installment, which was announced on the 15-year anniversary of The L Word‘s first season. Marja-Lewis Ryan, the writer of 6 Balloons and The Four-Faced Liar, will be serving as showrunner and as executive producer for the new installment. Stars Beals, Moennig, and Leisha Hailey will also serve as executive producers. Showtime’s President of Entertainment Gary Levine had this to say about Ryan’s involvement and the series’ return:
“Marja has brought her unique and contemporary vision to The L Wordand blended it beautifully into the fabric of Ilene’s groundbreaking series. This revered show was both entertaining and impactful when it originally ran on Showtime, and we are confident that our new version will do that and more in 2019.”
The L Word is currently slated to be released this year.
