The Mandalorian: Carl Weathers Praises Star Wars First Live-Action Female Director Deborah Chow

Is it a big thing that Star Wars just got its first-ever live-action female director, maybe, depending on how you look at it? The latest episode of The Mandalorian called “The Sin” was directed by Deborah Chow, and this does indeed mark the first time a female director has ever worked on a live-action Star Wars property.

According to actor Carl Weathers though, it’s really no big deal when you look at it from his point of view. The actor recently spoke with Variety about all things Mandalorian and was asked about Deborah Chow, here is what he said.

“She was really fantastic to work with on so many levels. It really came across that she knew what she wanted and had mapped out what this episode was going to be very precisely. As an actor working with so many different directors, when somebody has a great sense of what they want to do, it allows you a lot more freedom and your choices are much more in sync. She took the pressure off of me and the other actors.”

And about her being the first female Star Wars director,

“I don’t want to pour water on that or anything, but to me it isn’t such a big deal. Why is it such a big deal if a woman directs an episode of Star Wars and does a great job? She came in and hit it out of the park. Good directors are good directors and it’s high time that we give people a shot who are just good directors and who do a great job.”

I think all I can do is echo Weathers words, Episode 3 was great, and definitely the biggest action episode of the series so far. Does it matter than it was a female director, well it shouldn’t but because of the way Hollywood has and does still work, then I guess it is a big deal, and proof that this is not the domain of the male creatives only.

Chow spoke herself about this momentous turning point for Stars Wars when she spoke with Vanity Fair recently as well.

“Even when I first got this job, it didn’t even cross my mind. I don’t know what fairyland I was in, to not think this was significant. But I went through prep and it didn’t occur to me until somebody said it on one of the first days of shooting.”

She noted that Bryce Dallas Howard directs episode four of the show, and the second unit team has several female directors. “It didn’t occur to me that I was the first one to leap. I want it to be about the work. I want to be a good director, not a good female director, not a good Asian director. But by the same token, obviously, my career path and the representation… it is important. It is meaningful. I want to see more women directors and I want to see more directors of color.”

At the end of the day, as a fan, I want to see good stories, well-acted, and well shot, so I don’t really care what name is behind an episode, and whether that person is a woman of Asian heritage or a Twi-Lek just came in from hyperspace. The sin was a great episode of The Mandalorian and next week we have the episode directed by Bryce Dallas Howard as Chow notes.
