Honestly, when all said and done, I think director David Ayer deserves a medal. From everything we know, his vision of Suicide Squad was placed to the side in favor of the studio’s own, and the end result was a film that felt more like an odd music video than an actual movie. Fans were not kind to it, and at the end of the day, the studio went on to James Gunn for its sequel. And yet, Ayer has been nothing but supportive of the studio and everything else moving forward.
But, as was made clear from the get-go that James Gunn’s film isn’t quite a sequel, but is considered to be a reboot of sorts. In a recent series of tweets from Ayer himself.
“It’s not a sequel it’s a reinvention and @JamesGunn is going to absolutely knock it out of the park. I’m cheering every step a way.”

There was then an interesting question as to whether or not Ayer’s film has nothing to do with the overall continuity.
“Yes that is correct – some characters and elements will be used but @JamesGunn is reinventing the universe. Everybody recognizes the immense potential of the franchise. “
So, I’m not gonna lie…I don’t quite understand. Does that mean The Suicide Squad will move forward as of the first movie didn’t happen at all? In essence, is everything there being completely ignored and phased from existence. Ayer’s comment seems to imply so, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was changed later on down the line.
Furthermore, one can’t help but wonder if this means Harley Quinn’s first in-universe appearance will actually be Birds of Prey and if that means Jared Leto’s Joker is no longer canon.
Oh, the confusion of the DCEU.
