The Suicide Squad James Gunn Rumored To Adapt This Sci-Fi Classic For TV

When it rains, it pours. A couple of short years ago, James Gunn’s career hit a bit of a speed bump when some tasteless years-old tweets resurfaced. He was bumped from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by Disney almost immediately. Of course, we knew his career would ultimately be okay, as other studios quickly vied for his attention, leading to his involvement in the upcoming The Suicide Squad. Now, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 back on his plate, James Gunn is definitely quite the busy guy. So why not add something else to his plate?

According to the folks over at The Illuminerdi, Gunn is signed on as executive producer and director of The Martian Chronicles. This is a sci-fi tale from the legendary Ray Bradbury, who many may recognize from his work on such classics as Fahrenheit 451. But what is The Martian Chronicles about?

Well, in all honesty, it’s not really a story with a complete throughline narrative. Rather, it’s a series of short stories that revolve around the theory of mankind moving from Earth to Mars. I honestly don’t remember a whole lot in terms of details from when I read the book in middle school, but there was very little in terms of connective tissue apart from the concept. That being said, I guess it’s possible the stories could have been in chronological order, even if they weren’t directly connected.

There are no details about the show itself, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they took a sort of Black Mirror approach. Sure, it can all be loosely connected, but the most effective way to tell this story could be to have each episode be sort of a sci-fi-esque morality tale that follows along the trend of seeing humanity ascend from a devastated Earth onto another planet.

Regardless, Gunn is a great choice for this, as he’s shown his affinity for heart and for science fantasy. There is no word yet on whether or not he’ll actually be signed on to help develop or if he’ll be involved past the pilot as a director.
