Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has found the star for his next film. Is it Thor’s Chris Hemsworth? Or maybe it’s Avengers: Endgame’s Mark Ruffalo. Neither. Taika Waititi’s next film will star Taika Waititi. That’s right, he both stars in and directs his next film titled Jojo Rabbit. Jojo Rabbit is certainly an odd name for a title. However, with a pedigree of comedic quirky films such as What We Do In The Shadows and Thor: Ragnorak under his belt. How can you not get excited by a movie described as “anti-hate satire”?
Jojo Rabbit is Waititi’s follow-up to Thor: Ragnarok and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. The film is based on the novel “Caging Skies” by Christine Leunens.
Waititi’s next film will be a period piece set during World War II. It will tell the story of a lonely German boy played by Roman Griffin Davis. His world is flipped when he uncovers his mother who is played by Avengers: Endgame’s Scarlett Johansson. Or rather the fact that she is hiding a young girl in their attic. The young actress playing this role is Leave No Trace’s Thomasin McKenzie. Waititi will portray Davis’ imaginary friend in the form of Adolf Hitler.
Waititi says of Jojo Rabbit:
“It’s my version of… a lonely boy’s best version of his hero, which is really his dad.”
The film also stars Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant and Alfie Allen. Jojo Rabbit will hit theaters on Oct. 18, 2019. It’s also worth noting that Waititi’s depiction of Hitler will be complex and unsympathetic. He will represent characteristics found in both Jojo’s father and Hitler.
