Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is in its second week of release and enjoying a decent success with just about $450m worldwide. Also, it has an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. So, now that the secrets are out for the cameos and Illuminati, people are talking about them more publicly. One of the biggest questions has been who was and wasn’t in the running for the Illuminati variants. Michael Waldron addressed the rumored Tom Cruise as Iron Man cameo with Rolling Stone:

“Yeah, that was totally made up. I mean, there’s no cut footage of Tom Cruise!  But I love Tom Cruise, and I said to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige]  at one point, I was like, Could we get Tom Cruise’s Iron Man? I remember reading about that in Ain’t It Cool News back in the day, that Tom Cruise was going to be Iron Man.”

Okay, so Waldron remembered an old casting story and thought it would be a cool idea for MoM. However, there was no effort made to get the Mission: Impossible star to suit up. Waldron told the outlet that Cruise was filming M: I 7 & 8 at the time and that fans just ran with a wild online rumor.

Fan Casting Issues

Personally, I hated the idea of Cruise being in the film. I like a few movies he’s in, but I would be taken out of the movie with him showing up. The fan casting of you-know-who becoming reality was a bit distracting too. It blurred the lines between variant appearance rules more for the average viewer. Everyone is forgetting about the radically different Loki variants and there being three different Peter Parkers. I guess we’ll see what the future holds over the next few years.
