Tron Sequel Takes Crucial Next Step Forward, Nabs Lion Director

Tron 3 moving ahead with Jared Leto titled Tron: Ares

It sounds like the oft-discussed Tron sequel could be moving forward very soon over at Disney. Not too long ago, there were rumblings of a film centered around actor Jared Leto. Now, this morning, Deadline is reporting that the sci-fi franchise’s next entry has a director. The man in question is named Garth. Davis, and while you may not know his name, he helmed the critically-acclaimed Lion, which hit theaters way back in 2016.

The currently-untitled Tron film would act as a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy. According to the report, Davis “aggressively pursued” this gig over at Disney. So while this is set to be his first tentpole film, the fac that he actively pursued it bodes well for its quality. It means he is emotionally invested in it, and therefore hints at a stronger movie. The most recent draft of the film was written by Jesse Wigutow.

Tron: Legacy sadly underwhelmed the box office back when it first came out. In all fairness, it did okay for the time, but it did seem like Disney was hoping for more than $400 million globally. In fact, if there is any real legacy with the Tron franchise, “underwhelming” seems to be it. That first movie wasn’t well-received either, but it was a solid indication of the potential of VFX. Even the solid Disney animated TV show Tron: Uprising, while pretty awesome, ended up getting canceled early. Though, for that last one, I blame the U.S. animation landscape not being ready for teen-centric tales.

While Davis hopping on board Tron is a good sign for the film, it is worth noting that no greenlight has been given. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an extra draft or two left over the next year or so before any real production begins. But between Leto pushing this one forward and Davis finally steering the ship, I’d be surprised if this didn’t happen.
