True Detective Gets Season 5 With Same Showrunner – Fool Me Once…

True Detective gets a Season 5 with the same showrunner as Season 4, Issa López; Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...

As announced yesterday, True Detective gets a Season 5 with the same showrunner as Season 4, Issa López; Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice… However, I will get to my gripes about Season 4 after the news. Season 4 of True Detective just ended and it had record numbers of viewers for this show. That is always the most important metric for a studio. Therefore it’s a no brainer that it’s been renewed for Season 5.

“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films. “She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”

From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” said Issa López, Showrunner, Writer, and Executive Producer. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”

Fool Me Once…

As you may have guessed, I’ll be tapping out of True Detective Season 5. Season 4 started strong and you can see by my coverage in the related section below I was getting into it. There were definitive connections between Season 4 and Season 1 which proved they were set in the same Universe. However sadly, that’s about as far as it went. True Detective Season 4 took a nose dive for me around Episode 4 and never recovered.

Sadly the mysteries were pretty easily guessed by fans and not that exciting. The permafrost angle was the top theory by end of Episode 2.  The only mysteries left were whether half the cast had sever mental illness or there really was ghosts and spooky stuff. However, the worst thing about Season 4 is the internal jumps of logic, continuity errors and generally stilted writing. Foster was good, but I can’t think of anyone else who was good in the show. In fact the show’s biggest selling point to fans was the season 1 connections and the promise of a complicated set of revelations. Polar bears with one eye had zero context and the suicidal deer were apparently just a coincidence.

Storms came and went as the plot required. Clues were lost and found as the plot needed them to be. I genuinely after episode 4 thought, this is going to end badly. I also know that sentiment was shared by any fans I was talking to online. In fact by the end the fans were making memes out of some of the crazy dialogue and nonsensical statements being made by characters. One of the themes of the show was that it’s good to believe there’s life after death. So give me an argument, or a debate on that. Instead I was preached to that Danvers was wrong and Navarro was right.

There are so many questions left by this Season that you could just fall about laughing discussing with friends.

Sorry HBO, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. I’ll be waiting till it’s all out for True Detective Season 5 and checking reviews first. Because I am not sitting through that again.

What are your thoughts as True Detective gets a Season 5 with the same showrunner as Season 4, Issa López? Anyone enjoy this till the end? Thoughts below as always.
