Our journey into the ninth layer of hell continues. It was crazy enough that Venom was doing well enough to crack half a billion dollars at the box office, and it was more than enough for it to approach $700 million at the box office, but now it looks like it’s gone above and beyond yet again following its opening in China.
Thanks to this past weekend in the theaters, everyone’s favorite Symbiote has managed to take in a whopping $780 million worldwide. What started out as most of us saying, “Hey, it did pretty good for what the movie was,” to, “Damn, this is really good for almost any movie out there.”

To put this into perspective, the film has grossed higher than both films in the Amazing Spider-Man series, which grossed a worldwide total of $757.9 million and $708.9 million, respectively. That’s right. While neither of these films was a huge success, they still made substantial coin for Sony (they also had the brand recognition of Spider-Man behind it). It’s also worth noting that Venom will definitely outpace Spider-Man 2‘s $783.8 million haul and will be fast approaching the original Spider-Man‘s $821 cume.
In short, Venom continues to break all sorts of expectations, further cementing this as an amazing business decision on Sony’s part in spite of the movie’s middling reception from critics.
