Warner Bros. Pushes Back Dune To Fall Of 2021

Dune

Dune has been pushed back!

The frustrating world of the 2020 entertainment world continues this week. For obvious reasons, most of the big market theaters have been closed since sometime in March. In small patches some have opened, then closed continuing a vicious cycle. This really sucks for studios as they really want their films in theaters. Some since the beginning have said screw it and pushed their films back to 2021. Others have continued to tease everyone with hopeful release dates only have to push them back again and again.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ Dune is the next in many films being pushed back into late 2021 according to Collider. It had originally been slated for December 18th of this year. But that seemed like it would likely change after Wonder Woman 1984 had been pushed back to Christmas Day. At the time of that move, Warner Bros. had been optimistic that the market could handle both films, especially during the holiday season. But there is a bigger issue.

Unfortunately, there is currently still no vaccine insight for the virus. Also even in select markets that have opened, the fact is that there are a lot of Americans still not comfortable with going to the theaters. Another big blow to this film and many others is Cineworld’s decision to shut down all of its Regal Cinemas locations in the United States.

The new slated date for Dune is now October 1st, 2021. Director Denis Villeneuve is said to fully support this decision as he made the film to be primarily enjoyed in theaters. Warner Bros. and Legendary felt the same way. You can’t blame the studios for being optimistic about trying to plan things for this year, especially when there is marketing involved. Let’s just hope sooner rather than later we can go back to a regular release schedule. Also, it is interesting to note that for the time being Wonder Woman 1984 is still slated for Christmas 2020.
