We Bare Bears: The Movie Non-Spoiler Review

We Bare Bears concluded last year after a four-season run. Those who have followed the series know the charming quality the show has. Following three bears just trying to find a way in the world reached across the target audience of the show. We Bare Bears: The Movie was originally intended to be released June 30th after pushing back the original June 8th release date. However, the film was published on June 8th as scheduled by Amazon by accident. While it is easy to point blame towards Amazon the release date was changed last week. If you were able to purchase the film before Amazon quickly changed the release date you were able to watch the film. Keeping in mind that most were not able to watch the film, this review will not contain spoilers.

The plot of the film We Bare Bears: The Movie features Grizz, Panda, and Ice Bear trying to escape to Canada after being chased out of town. The catalyst is similar to The Simpsons Movie with the brothers causing trouble for everyone in town. Grizz’s behavior in the film exemplifies his role as a big brother taking control of the situation while trying to save his brothers. This overprotectiveness leads to strife among the brothers, mainly Panda, as they began their life on the run. The character dynamics between the brothers was the best part of the film that had highs and lows through the film. The low point of the brother’s relationship led to Panda stating they weren’t brothers. Though, by the end of the film, the brothers reconcile their differences and end up back in San Francisco.

The film featured many memes throughout the last decade fitting with We Bare Bares‘s heavily pop culture theme. From Gangnam Style to Pizza Rat and practically every pop culture moment in between. The pop culture references were primarily featured in the first two acts of the film. However, the meme filled story quickly goes to heart-wrenching emotions within the final act of the film. While this was a strong pivot in story direction it was not jarring as the transition from act two to three was seamless.

The art in We Bare Bears: The Movie is the standard level seen throughout the series to this point. While this is not a bad thing outright but I would like more for a film at retail. The animation is the only slight difference between the show and We Bare Bears: The Movie. The film has an animation that has more fluidity in movement. There is something to be said about having the same art consistency throughout the film.

Voice acting was another point of consistency throughout the film. Marc Evan Jackson (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Recreation) playing the film’s antagonist Agent Trout was a bonus to the film. Jackson made Trout come off as a menacing villain who was determined to bring the world to a natural order.

While I enjoyed We Bare Bears: The Movie, I do not believe it was more than a made-for-television film. The film was similar to the send-off to Steven Universe received last year which aired on Cartoon Network. Having it on retail sites rather than Cartoon Network seems like a cash grab. The biggest difference between the film and regular episodes is slightly better animation quality. The plot of the film is particularly fitting to current events and trying to find one’s way in life. Overall, this is a satisfying conclusion to a heartwarming and fun-filled series. A spinoff series featuring the brothers as cubs is currently in development.
