It should come as no surprise that shows like HBO’s Westworld and Game of Thrones take a long time to produce. Both shows have massive sets, massive stories, and massive budgets and it takes time to use all of that well. For those of you that are big fans of the former, you’ll be excited to hear that filming for season three begins next month. However there is not set date for release, and unfortunately there’s no pattern from the other seasons to go off of. Season one debuted in October of 2016 while season two hit in April of 2018. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this hit in the spring of 2020

It is interesting though how HBO produced a season every year for GoT, until the two year gap for the final season, but Westworld had an 18 month gap between it’s first two seasons. Both shows require large casts and a decent amount of special effects, but GoT is much bigger in scale. Not that Westworld is small, but they don’t have the massive armies, war machines, and dragons to deal with.

As for where season three will take the viewers, co-creator Lisa Joy had this to say:

“It was always the plan to explore the real world and we have Dolores there, Bernard’s there and a creature that is certainly inhabiting Hale’s body is there. So we’ll come to know more of who ‘Hale’ is. There are three Hosts out in the world and next season will really be an exploration of what they find and who they become.”

I think it will be very interesting to see these characters in a completely different setting. It can really open up some unique story opportunities.
