Do you believe in miracles? Can someone really be blessed by the divine to perform all kinds of miracles to benefit humanity? What if that power wasn’t coming from above but from something sinister below? This is the premise for the upcoming horror film from Sony Pictures, The Unholy. This film is based on the 1983 horror novel, Shrine, by English writer James Herbert. Today, Sony Pictures has released the trailer for the film, which you can check out down below!

Here is the synopsis for The Unholy:
The Unholy follows the story of Alice, a young hearing-impaired girl who, after a supposed visitation from the Virgin Mary, is inexplicably able to hear, speak and heal the sick. As word spreads and people from near and far flock to witness her miracles, a disgraced journalist (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), hoping to revive his career, visits the small New England town to investigate. When terrifying events begin to happen all around, he starts to question if these phenomena are the works of the Virgin Mary or something much more sinister. The Unholy is produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Evan Spiliotopoulos, written for the screen and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos (Hercules, Charlie’s Angels, Beauty and the Beast). The film is based upon James Herbert’s best-selling book Shrine.

This trailer has me looking forward to this film. As a Latino, I have always been surrounded by stories of the miracles of the Virgin Mary. Something that for the most part I roll my eyes at. This film takes a look at those miracles and asks, what if they came from a dark source? Since they are curing people, does anyone even care to look at where the source of her power is? As far as a horror film, this looks pretty solid as Jeffrey Dean Morgan is fantastic.
