Some fantasy Barside Buzz today as new Wheel of Time Season 3 leaks suggest potentially big change from the books for Matt. Before we get to the information, let’s state the obvious. There could be some mild SPOILERS in this one folks. I won’t detail exactly what happens in the books. However, I have to navigate around the plot to explain the significance of the rumor.
The details come from a regular WoT source as WoT Up has a new video with some information from the recently wrapped portion of the filming. Specifically the channel was informed of which cast members were present during the location shooting for the Tanchico portion of the story. In book 4 (mild SPOILERS only), our characters are essentially split between two plots, one in Tanchico and one in Rhuidean.
The surprising changes mention in the video below are regarding Matt Cauthon, played by Donal Finn. Now I will warn you if you watch the full video. The host does get into specifics about what Matt gets up to in the books, which I will avoid. However the main gist is that in the books Matt goes to Rhuidean and yet Donal Finn was part of the cast shooting the Tanchico plot. As was Min, who was in nether location in the book.

This may worry some fans as there are one or two important moments that happen to Matt in Rhuidean. However, as the WOT Up channel notes, this could be got around. Matt could have some of these moments prior to the cast splitting up to go their separate ways. This would possibly allow the show to get into some later books that happen in a place called Ebou Dar. Matt is with this group in Ebou Dar. Therefore WoT Up speculates that could be a location and plot abandoned for the show. With some of that coming quicker within Tanchico in Season 3. Certainly I can’t see much room for Matt in the book version of the Tanchico plot. It really is all about Elayne and Nynaeve chasing the Black Ajah.
It does slightly concern. Mianly due to some worries I have about an exclusion in the show I hope doesn’t happen. Of course changes are going to have to happen in a 14 books series. A series which is only ever getting at most 8 Seasons of TV. Therefore, I’ll wait and see the final result before judging. I thought Season 2 was very good despite a lot of changes from the books.
Just to point out though, it is possible Matt turns up in both locations. There’s location filming happening now in South Africa for Rhuidean. If Donal Finn is spotted on set, it could indicate Matt is in both halves of the story.
