Why Margot Robbie Struggled With Pitching Birds Of Prey

Like any other industry, Hollywood tends to be pretty risk-averse. I mean, it makes sense. Movies are incredibly expensive, and it’s very difficult to actually make money on these things. So why not put yourself in as good a position as possible in order to make a profit? Have your film be a part of an existing I.P. and lean into what’s worked in the past. Of course, there are some downsides, including the tendency to try out new things.

As odd as this may sound, that was kind of a problem with the upcoming film Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). While the film does feature a big star, a familiar character, and an established universe, it was still difficult for star and producer Margot Robbie to pitch.

“I remember when I was first pitching the project,” Robbie told Glamour, “I was struggling to find comparisons other than Charlie’s Angels, which I adored when I was younger. Then I was like, that’s a long time ago, though.”

Indeed, there haven’t been a lot of action movies starring more than one woman in the lead, When pitching a film, studios often want comp films so they can assess whether something will actually hit with audiences. If there are no comp films, there may be no market for your movie — at least not based on previous patterns. That’s a studio’s prerogative, but it is a bit sad that that’s been the pattern over the course of decades, so it’s great Robbie was able to get this thing made.

What do you think of Robbie’s comments? What other action films are there starring an ensemble female cast? Let us know down below!
