Why The Author Of The Rise Of Skywalker Novel Loves That Rey Took The Skywalker Name

In a recent interview, Daisy Ridley says she's ready for a Rey return in the upcoming Star Wars sequel currently in development.

In the end, the desert scavenger Rey turned out to be a Skywalker after all, sort of speak. While the blood of Emperor Palpatine runs through her veins, she elected to part with that namesake and join the first house of a galaxy far, far away.

For the author of the novelization of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Rae Carson, Rey taking the Skywalker name paralleled her own life.  While speaking with StarWars.com she described a the similarities between her and Rey as well as how it relates to the Skywalker Saga as a whole, you can check it out below.

“When I was 18 years old, I took on the moniker of my stepfather to honor the bonds of love and trust between us. I imagine it was much the same for Rey, who wanted to honor her own chosen family. I recognize that Rey’s decision proved controversial, and I look forward to discussing this with fans for years to come. But my current take is this: The entire Skywalker saga is about Palpatine turning or trying to turn Skywalkers to the dark side. He especially hopes that Rey will prove a worthy vessel for his own power and ambition and become the Skywalkers’ final downfall. But in spite of all his efforts over the course of three generations, he fails. Rey rejects everything about him and takes on the Skywalker mantle and legacy. In the end, it’s a Palpatine who turns to the light, thus handing the Skywalkers their ultimate victory.”

The connection of Rae Carson and Rey Skywalker is heartwarming. And I can see why it’s special to Carson. However, speaking from the viewpoint of a Star Wars nerd, if she was going to be a Skywalker, I say just make her a Skywalker. From the moment Daisy Ridley was announced as the trilogy’s lead, fans, whether they wanted it this way or not, thought it inevitable that a Skywalker she would be.

It just feels as if they wanted her to be a Skywalker, but didn’t want to rehash old storylines. So they had her adopt the name as a way to circumvent retreading on the older films.
