Last year’s Wonder Woman did much to stabilize DC’s shakey expanded universe, though it was somewhat destabilized once again by Justice League. With the announcement yesterday that Joaquin Phoenix has officially signed on the play the Joker in an origin film, DC is exploring options outside of their shared film universe, at least at the current time, for now anyway.

Hopefully, Wonder Woman 1984 can bring the studio’s expanded universe back to stable ground.

Wonder Woman 1984 is set to be released next year and will be the follow up to DC’s only all-around hit film, Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot will return as the Amazon Princess as well as Chris Pine as Steve Trevor. Actor Pedro Pascal (Game of ThronesNarcos) is also set to play a currently unnamed character. Patty Jenkins, who helmed the first film, will once again direct, while also co-writing the film with Dave Callaham and Geoff Johns.
