X-Men: Dark Phoenix: Director Simon Kinberg On The Villain Played By Jessica Chastain

Last night fans were treated to the first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. I can say that the trailer has boosted up my interest in the film considerably. The film’s director, Simon Kinberg, recently spoke with IGN and revealed some interesting details about the villain of the film, played by Jessica Chastain.

“She is from, let’s say, not our planet, her character. I’ll keep it relatively mysterious but it is a cosmic story in a way that is extraterrestrial, which is something we’ve never done in the X-Men movies before but is obviously something that is integral to the Dark Phoenix story so I felt we couldn’t’ do what we did on X3 and ignore that. We had to actually embrace it. So there’s a fair amount that takes place in space, and the inciting incident that starts to turn Jean, let’s say, dark and fill her with this power that she can’t control happens in space. And then there are forces from space that come to Earth because of that.”

Space you say? Intriguing. I am not familiar with the character as far as the comics, but from what I understand, this is similar to the character’s origin, with slight tweaks. One thing I am concerned about is will this film matter in the end? Will Disney wipe the slate clean and totally recast all the X-Men? While we haven’t heard anything like that, it is possible. Disney may very well want to start anew and separate their X-men from the Fox films that have sort of been hit or miss. Either way, this will be the last X-Men film set in their own world, as fans hope to see them engage with their counterparts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
