The mystery character and WandaVision. If you’re new to this piece of speculation let me get you up to speed. Jointly let me welcome you to Free Talk Friday, a weekly column, where I go into a bit more detail on….whatever is on my mind, I guess?
First let me say that as we hit past the first image here, I am getting into SPOILERS for WandaVision Episode 7. It’s just unavoidable not I’m afraid. So make sure you watch WandaVision Episode 7 before checking this out.

Before I even get into what happened in this week’s episode of WandaVision, let’s explore the history of this mystery character shall we. All of this began with two comments made by two of WandaVision‘s actors. First off Paul Bettany made some comments about getting to work with someone he never had before, and that this person was a surprise. Then we had Elizabeth Olsen make reference to a Luke Skywalker type reveal from the recent The Mandalorian finale.
Now, one could be forgiven for thinking this mystery character and WandaVision thing was merely about Evan Peters. Two weeks ago, Evan Peters was revealed to be playing ‘Pietro’ Wanda’s dead not-brother. However this week we found out that whoever Paul Bettany was referring to, it was not Peters.
The News
In a recent interview with Esquire, Bettany was asked about the mystery character and WandaVision. Bettany’s response confirms that whoever he was talking about, it was not Peters.
“Truth is, of all of the characters we were trying to keep secret, a lot of them got out through leaks,” Bettany said. “There is one character that has not been revealed. And it is very exciting. It is an actor I’ve longed to work with all of my life. We have some amazing scenes together and I think the chemistry between us is extraordinary and fireworks on set.”
In the same interview, Bettany also made this comment about the Mephisto fan theories. His answer was interesting, but hardly a confirmation of any kind.
“Some of them are eerily accurate,” he said. “But this one that mentions Mephisto? I can’t speak to… right now. Because I’m worried about getting fired.”
Is Bettany just playing here? Would that be enough to get him into trouble? I don’t think so because there is two possible twists going on here. Marvel could be trying to set Mephisto up as a villain, only to pull the rug. Therefore, if Bettany revealed it was Mephisto, Marvel might not be happy? Or, and what most fans have jumped to, is this some evidence Mephisto could be the big bad?
So Who Is It?
Let’s get straight to the most popular fan theory right now for the mystery character and WandaVision. Al Pacino as Mephisto!
Yup, you see fans have looked back at previous interviews with Bettany, and one actor he said years ago he would love to work with was Pacino. Then you have the fact that Pacino already played Mephisto, Lucifer, Satan (he has so many names). Remember Pacino’s turn as Satan in Devil’s Advocate? Now add in the fact that Pacino spoke years ago about discussions with Feige for a role.
It all makes sense, like Charlie above!
We Can’t Be Wrong, right?
Well, it’s really not that simple. For a start Pacino was at one time considered for the role of Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2. Now, before anyone checks, yes, Pacino’s comments came after that movie that released. However, it may still have been a reference to the discussion from Iron Man 2. Next con to this, is whether it would be a little too meta to have Pacino show up as Mephisto. For a start Pacino has aged a lot since Devil’s Advocate, would Satan really make himself look like an old man?
There is also the fact that Pacino was not the only actor mentioned by Bettany who is still alive. French actor Vincent Cassel was also mentioned in that list. Now Cassel isn’t quite as attractive an option as Pacino for fans, so he is dismissed top readily. Finally, the actor in question could be someone that Bettany just left off that list he mentioned years ago. All we can say for sure is that whoever this is, Bettany has never worked with them before. Sorry, but I have to play Devil’s advocate on this one…..
Current Events
We also have to factor in the fact that Agnes was revealed to be Agatha Harkness this week. Who could have seen that coming, apart from everyone. But is there a specific need to have Agatha be a second in command? No, however there is Ralph to consider. Does Ralph even exist, she could have just made him up to fit in? I don’t know, but if there is a Ralph, then I expect it to be important and revealing. Perhaps a character like Mephisto or Nightmare could make a compelling villain going into the Doctor Strange sequel?

We also have to take into account the recent comments from Captain Rambo, I mean Monica Rambeau actress Teyonah Parris. We covered this already, so you can check the original story in the related link above. However Parris said that she cannot wait for fans to find out who the aerospace engineer is her character referred to. In that article I reasoned only two details. It is likely a man, and likely a character we have not seen before.
Fans tuning in this week thought that character would be revealed, but no. Unless you are one of those fans who thinks the uniformed SWORD agent who spoke to Monica was who she was talking about. Yeah, because that makes a whole lot of sense doesn’t it? A female (she said ‘guy’) no name, nobody. I apologize to the actor for calling her character a nobody, but in the context of this show and the MCU, sorry but that’s accurate. I don’t think so.
The Final Word
So, what is the answer to the mystery character and WandaVision question? We don’t know, that’s my point. Yes, it could be Al Pacino as Mephisto, or Matthew McConaughey as Nightmare (that one was my theory, don’t ask). Or, it could equally still be Blue Marvel, or Reed Richards showing up as Monica’s guy.
We just don’t know, and there are no credible leaks out there giving answers. I don’t honestly think we are going to know the answer to this puzzle until Marvel airs the relevant episode. In two weeks time, WandaVision is over. Would we even want spoilers for a potential Luke Skywalker (The Mandalorian) moment in WandaVision? I don’t think I do, and I’m the guy for LRM that reads all the spoilers to see which ones check out after the fact. Not a part of my job I love though.
There is no answer yet, so enjoy the speculation for another week at least. Where as always do you stand on the Mystery character and WandaVision? Leave thoughts below if you can, and thanks for reading.
