White As Snow Has French Trailer Re-Imagine Modern Day Snow White Tale

White As Snow starring Lou de Laage and Isabelle Huppert

Snow White’s tale is all about her beauty and the jealousy of her stepmother. With the French film White As Snow, the story is re-imagined as a sexual dark comedy about female liberation. The concept is twisted with the stepmother threatened by the sexual freedom of her millennial daughter in this contemporary fairy tale.

The film stars Lou de Laage, Isabelle Huppert, Charles Berling, Damien Bonnard, Jonathan Cohen, Richard Frechette, Vincent Macaigne, Pablo Pauly, and Benoit Poelvoorde. Anne Fontaine directed the movie from a script written by Pascal Bonitzer and Fontaine.

Here’s the official synopsis of White As Snow:

When Claire (Lou de Laage), a beautiful but reserved young woman unwittingly provokes the furious jealousy of her stepmother Maud (Isabelle Huppert), life as she knows it is over. Sent far away from home, Claire awakens, both figuratively and literally, in a small village in the French mountains. As if by magic, her formerly shy demeanor is gone and she is suddenly aware of her feminine power. It’s the beginning of radical emancipation. As Claire meets the locals and starts to take joy in her sexuality, soon one, two, three…seven men fall under her charm. For the first time in her life, she allows herself to indulge in no-strings sex, taking pride in belonging to no one. But then Maud arrives wanting to reconnect, and Claire must decide who to trust—her sophisticated but cold stepmother, or the circle of adoring men that now surround her.

White As Snow isn’t those typical retelling or remake of a fairy, but nearly a complete re-imagination of their fairy tale with a modern, adult retelling of this children’s story. French comedy films tend to take twisted dark sudden turns, so this may be quite an interesting foreign film.

White As Snow opens in Los Angeles theaters on August 20.
