New Blade director Yann Demange confirms the movie will be R-rated in a recent interview. Demange, the latest incumbent helmer of Blade (now written by Michael Green) spoke to Deadline recently about his upcoming short film Dammi. As far as we know the script is still be worked on for Blade. Therefore, no definitive date has been set for production to begin. Frankly, given the strikes, that’s the same even if the script was submitted and accepted.
Given the source material, the blood and vampires, and the previous movies, Blade does feel like he suits R-rated. I’m not sure that the concept would work as well in a PG-13 setting. Luckily as the title says, we don’t have to worry about it.
“They gave me the R, which is so important.”
“I come out of this wanting to be more open, more vulnerable and bring a more personal aspect to my work,” he said. “But for Blade, we are going to have fun because Mahershala is such a deep actor. I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that. He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen.”

The story we reference in the above link, whilst from a trade, has been attacked by many insiders as being false. Ergo, we still don’t really know if Blade truly has had it’s budget lowered? Though, as I said at the time, I’m not against it. Having a lower budget usually requires an engaging script to work. However, that doesn’t mean that’s always achieved.
Demange is up and coming, but he’s an interesting director and Blade is a movie I do look forward to seeing. In my opinion R-rated is the correct call, let’s see if it pays off for Marvel?
