Another Mandalorian S3 Update Which Goes Against What We Recently Reported

The Mandalorian Season 3 premiere will hit Disney+ on March 1st, 2023

Another Mandalorian S3 update, this time from a new source we all agree has very good sources, Collider. Now over the last few days since Pedro Pascal said he wasn’t filming Mandalorian S3, ourselves, Jordan Maison and KRT have all said Mandalorian S3 had been filming. This of course was based on what we heard from our own independent sources. Now Collider is saying that this is not the case. Let me let them fill you in with the direct quote below.

However, Season 3 of The Mandalorian is not currently heading into production. That’s because the LA stages are, for the moment, in use by the upcoming Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series starring Ewan McGregor in his official return to the galaxy far, far away since Revenge of the Sith in 2005. The show is set 10 years after the events of that film and production on this series will reportedly take many months.

We hear the plan is for The Mandalorian Season 3 to begin filming at the end of this year, or in very early 2022. What that means is the season will not be premiering on Disney+ until late 2022.

The delay in The Mandalorian’s filming timeline can also likely, in part, be attributed to actor Pedro Pascal’s commitment to the TV adaptation The Last of Us. Slated to start production in July this year. Pascal has been cast to play Joel alongside Bella Ramsey’s Ellie and Gabriel Luna’s Tommy for the HBO series.

Pretty clear? However, here’s the thing. Obi-Wan Kenobi was always planned to film in LA after The Book of Boba Fett. Yet, we also have John Favreau who told us that Mandalorian S3 would begin filming after that show. So what gives? Surely something changed?

I’m not sure, something is weird about all this. For a start I think LRM has proved before that our Lucasfilm source is solid, as our hit rate is pretty much 100%, but things do change. I won’t speak for other sources that we backed, but these are sources I also trust. So could we all have it completely wrong? Yup, that’s possible. It could be that several sources have seen things filmed for The Book of Boba Fett that they assumed were actually for Mandalorian S3. However, I don’t think that feels right in this instance. I think our sources would know that to be honest.

Is it instead possible that the firing of Gina Carrano actually delayed Mando and there was just no announcement about it? Yes, that’s also possible, though I have zero evidence from any source to back up that claim. It’s all a bit of an enigma right now.

What I will say is that I’ll guess Collider (on the cusp of being considered a trade) are getting the information that Disney/Lucasfilm wants out there. That to me means that Disney has seen the speculation this week. Therefore this message is the one Disney want out there. It therefore seems like this was always planned, but we know that was not always the case. That’s what makes me think plans could have changed more…suddenly. It’s also possible the delay is due to Pascal’s commitment to The Last of Us. Perhaps Disney had not anticipated Pascal’s lack of availability when they scheduled things initially? Scheduling conflicts happen all the time.

All I will say is that a source I trust implicitly at Lucasfilm told me that Mandalorian S3 had been filming. It’s possible that was stopped and rescheduled though without our source being aware. Ultimately though, I think Collider‘s statement that Mando S3 would film later this year must be legit for the reasons I gave above. That also means I have to agree that the earliest we will see The Mandalorian S3 is late 2022. Kyle, Shockey, and I will be discussing all this on this week’s The Cantina. Maybe we will have a little more details to add, perhaps not? Tune in and find out I guess? Frankly, it could be a long time until we get full details here.

However I’ll bet that we find out eventually that some scenes for Mando S3 were shot earlier than the rest.
